One person was killed this morning after their vehicle struck a utility pole and caught fire at the Turkey Lake Service Plaza on the Florida Turnpike.
The incident took place around 5:22 a.m. on Thursday, June 9, at the plaza, which is at mile marker 263 on the turnpike. According to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol, a driver behind the wheel of a 2020 Chevrolet Trax was traveling northbound on a side service road within the plaza.
For unknown reasons, the driver lost control of the vehicle, struck a curb, and ran off the roadway, striking a utility pole.
The vehicle caught fire and became fully engulfed in flames, according to authorities.
The driver was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The medical examiner’s office will provide an update to FHP once they have positively identified the deceased.
