The Orlando City Soccer Club will play for the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup after a decisive victory in the semi-final round against the New York Red Bulls last night.
During that rain-soaked game on Wednesday, the Lions won by four goals to clinch their spot in the final match, which will be held on September 7. Because Orlando won the game, the team will host the final at Exploria Stadium, which is located at 655 W Church Street in downtown.
“We’ll keep our heads in the right place, try to be more consistent and score those goals that will give us points. Tonight we want to enjoy this great moment for our fans and for our Club, taking the Club to a second final, and hopefully we can give them this trophy,” said head coach Oscar Pareja after the victory.
Last night’s winner of the second semi-final match, Sacramento Republic FC, will face off against the Lions, who are playing for the cup in front of their home crowd for the first time.
It is only the team’s second time playing for a championship of any kind after a runner-up finish in the MLS is Back Tournament held in 2020.
