The drivers of two vehicles, one of which was traveling over 100 mph, have been arrested in connection with a head-on hit-and-run collision that claimed the lives of three individuals.
On Friday, April 7, State Attorney R.J. Larizza of the Seventh Judicial Circuit announced the arrests of 54-year-old Thomas Petry and 22-year-old Devin Perkins for their involvement in a December accident that killed three passengers.
The fatal accident took place in the early morning hours of December 11, 2022. According to authorities, Petry was driving a Toyota Tacoma into oncoming traffic on State Road 44, near Jesse Michael Drive in DeLand.
Petry’s vehicle crashed head-on with an Infiniti Q50 that was being driven by Perkins.
The three passengers in the car with Perkins died at the scene. Perkins and a passenger in the Tacoma being driven by Petry both sustained serious injuries.
After the crash, Petry walked away from the scene.
During their investigation, Florida Highway Patrol vehicular homicide detectives determined that Petry had been driving at a speed of over 100 mph before impact.
Both men are being held at the Volusia County Jail with no bond. Perkins faces three counts of vehicular homicide and one count of reckless driving with serious bodily injury. Petry faces three counts of vehicular homicide, as well as three counts of leaving the scene of a crash with death, leaving the scene of a crash with bodily injury, and reckless driving with serious bodily injury.
