A 36-year-old DeLand man was arrested after he allegedly shot another man during an argument outside a local bar early Thursday morning.
According to the DeLand Police Department, officers responded to a parking lot located in the 100 block of E Indiana Avenue at around 2:10 a.m. in reference to a person being shot. Upon arrival, they located a 52-year-old male victim who had sustained a non-life-threatening injury to his lower legs.
DPD stated that an investigation into the incident revealed that the victim and another man, identified as Joshua Jones, had been drinking at a local bar. Jones and the victim proceeded to get into an argument, which continued into the parking lot and roadway, according to police.
Shortly after Jones entered a black SUV, he allegedly pulled out a gun and fired it toward the victim, who was standing outside the vehicle on E Indiana Avenue.
“The bullet appeared to ricochet off the ground, hitting (the victim) with bullet fragments,” stated DeLand police.
According to DPD, Jones allegedly fired approximately nine more rounds while traveling eastbound on Indiana Avenue in the SUV. He then briefly left the scene before returning to the area, and he was taken into custody after officers conducted a traffic stop on the SUV.
Jones was arrested and transported to Volusia County Jail. He is being charged with aggravated battery with a firearm and unlawful discharge of a firearm.
The DeLand Police Department stated that the investigation into this incident is “active and ongoing.”
