One person died, and a family was displaced, after a fire ignited inside a DeLand home on Saturday night.

At around 10:35 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, The DeLand Fire Department and Volusia County Fire Rescue units were dispatched to a single-story home located in the 700 block of W Beresford Avenue, according to DFD.  

Shortly after arriving on scene, firefighters entered the residence and encountered heavy smoke. During an interior search, they located one person and a dog inside the home.

After the individual and dog were brought outside, paramedics began life-saving measures. The individual was transported to a local hospital, where they later passed away.

According to the fire department, crew members provided oxygen to the dog who was rescued.

The DeLand Fire Department stated in a social media post that the fire originated in the kitchen and appears to be “accidental in nature.”

A further investigation is currently being conducted by the State Fire Marshal.

The American Red Cross was contacted to assist the two adults and one pet that were displaced.
