A 16-year-old boy was killed, and another teen was critically injured, after their vehicle went airborne and struck a sign and tree along International Drive in Orange County early Monday morning.
The fatal accident took place at around 12:35 a.m. on Monday, June 3, near the intersection of International Drive and Tanglewood Bay Drive in Orlando.
According to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol, a 2006 Ford Fusion was traveling southbound on I-Drive, near the private driveway entrance of Tanglewood Bay Drive, in the center lane.
For reasons that are unknown, the car swerved to the right, and its front right wheel struck a curbed median. The car’s front left wheel then hit another curb, which caused the vehicle to become airborne.
Moments later, the car collided with a nearby entrance sign for a community before striking a tree. After the impact, the car overturned onto its left side, and a 16-year-old male passenger from Orlando was ejected from the vehicle.
The driver of the car, a 16-year-old Kissimmee boy, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The sole passenger was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center in critical condition.
In the report, an FHP trooper noted that both occupants of the car were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.
The crash remains under investigation, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
