An elderly driver was killed on Tuesday morning after his pickup truck blew a tire and crashed on Interstate 95 in Brevard County.

The fatal crash on I-95 occurred shortly before 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday, July 2, near mile marker 204, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

FHP stated that a 2005 Nissan Titan was traveling northbound on I-95, approximately one mile south of the State Road 528 exit, in the outside lane when one of the pickup truck’s left rear tires “ruptured.”

The blown tire caused the driver to overcorrect, and the pickup truck rotated before overturning on the grass shoulder. The vehicle came to a final rest on its driver’s side.

A trooper noted in the report that the driver, a 79-year-old Clewiston man, was not wearing a seatbelt, and he was ejected from the vehicle during the crash. He was airlifted to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

The pickup truck’s sole passenger, a 47-year-old Clewiston woman, was not injured.

The crash remains under investigation, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
