Prison corridor with jail cells

A 30-year-old inmate in Seminole County died on Thursday morning, two days after he got into a fight with another inmate at the jail.

According to the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office, at around 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16, 30-year-old Matthew Wilson allegedly got into an argument with another inmate at Seminole County Jail. The verbal altercation quickly turned physical, and Wilson’s head struck the ground during the fight.

“There was no report of the altercation occurring, and Wilson did not immediately seek medical attention,” stated SCSO in a media release.

Two hours after the altercation on Tuesday, Wilson informed deputies that he had “severe pain in his head.”

Medical staff at the jail evaluated Wilson before calling 911. He was transported to a local hospital for further medical attention.

At around 10:40 a.m. on Thursday, July 18, Wilson succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

The sheriff’s office stated that detectives reviewed security footage of the altercation involving Wilson and another inmate. In addition, detectives conducted interviews to determine the circumstances that surrounded the altercation.

According to SCSO, detectives believe that Wilson was “likely the primary aggressor” during the fight, and the other unidentified inmate was “acting in self-defense.”

Wilson was arrested on April 25, and he was being held at Seminole County Jail on multiple counts of violation of probation.

No charges have been filed in Wilson’s death, and the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office stated on Thursday afternoon that the preliminary investigation does not indicate that any policies or procedures were violated.
