A suspended 34-year-old Volusia County Sheriff’s Office sergeant was arrested this week after he was accused of hitting his wife during an altercation in Deltona.
According to the sheriff’s office, VCSO Sergeant Cody Cochran has been arrested and charged with domestic battery in connection with an incident that occurred on Thursday, August 1.
At around 10:20 a.m. on Thursday, VCSO deputies responded to the incident location after receiving a 911 call indicating that a couple was involved in a physical fight. Upon arrival, deputies interviewed a witness who stated that Cochran had struck his wife in her face during the altercation.
The sheriff’s office stated that Cochran’s wife did not report any injuries, and she told deputies that she did not wish to pursue criminal charges against him. However, the deputies determined that Cochran was the “primary aggressor” during the altercation, and he was placed under arrest.
According to VCSO, Cochran was hired by the sheriff’s office in 2011. At the time of his arrest, he was already on suspension pending the outcome of two internal affairs investigations that are unrelated to the incident involving his wife.
“The Sheriff’s Office has already begun the process of termination of (Cochran’s) employment,” stated VCSO in a social media post on Thursday evening.
After being arrested, Cochran was transported to Volusia County Jail, where he is being held without bond pending his first appearance in court.
“Domestic violence should not be accepted in our society, and it won’t be tolerated in our organization,” stated Sheriff Mike Chitwood following Cochran’s arrest. “While I’m glad the victim in this case wasn’t injured, there’s no excuse for domestic violence – especially not for a law enforcement officer sworn to uphold the law.”
