An elderly woman was killed, and another woman was seriously hurt, in a head-on collision in Brevard County on Monday evening.
The fatal two-vehicle crash occurred at around 8:10 p.m. on Monday, September 23, near the intersection of State Road 46 and Sweetwater Court, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.
A trooper noted in the report that two vehicles – a 2008 Mazda6 and 2018 Nissan Rogue – were traveling westbound on State Road 46, near the Sweetwater Court intersection. The Mazda was in front of the Nissan.
When the Mazda approached the intersection, the driver and sole occupant – an 82-year-old Mims woman – started to make a left turn towards Sweetwater Court before making a U-turn. She then attempted to head eastbound on State Road 46.
However, the Mazda proceeded to veer into the oncoming lane, directly in the path of the Nissan. As a result, the front section of both vehicles collided.
The Mazda’s elderly driver was transported to Parrish Medical Center in Titusville, where she was pronounced deceased. The report stated that she was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.
The driver and sole occupant of the Nissan, identified in the report as a 31-year-old Sanford woman, sustained serious injuries and was taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne for medical treatment.
The crash remains under investigation, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
