Edward James Manning, a devoted family man, accomplished professional, and generous mentor, departed this world on November 22, 2024, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire all who knew him.
Born on November 9, 1933, in Huntington, New York to Bonnie and James, Ed moved with his family to St. Petersburg, Florida in 1938. He graduated from St. Petersburg High School and promptly enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. Rising to the rank of Sergeant, he exemplified the Marine values of honor, courage, and commitment and served with distinction, including a prestigious assignment as a U.S. Embassy Guard in Germany. It was there that he met Mary “Jerry” McGowan, a U.S. Embassy Code Clerk. They married in 1956 in Munich and began a life rooted in love, partnership and shared aspirations.
Upon completing his military service, Ed and Jerry relocated to Alabama and Ed pursued his higher education at Auburn University. In just 2.5 years, Ed graduated with high honors, earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. His academic brilliance earned him a distinguished career opportunity with Ernst & Ernst, one of the prestigious “Big 8” accounting firms. Over decades of hard work and visionary leadership and dedication, Ed relocated from Alabama to Florida where he led the creation of the firm’s Ft. Lauderdale Tax practice in 1968. He became a partner in 1973, and in 1975 was appointed managing partner. In 1980, he and his family made their final relocation, and Ed became the managing partner in the Orlando office until retiring in 1990.
Ed’s professional excellence was matched by his passion for service and mentorship. He dedicated his time and lent his wisdom to numerous organizations. He was on the Board and held offices with the Broward Chapter of Florida Institute of CPA’s (President), Orlando Regional Healthcare System (Secretary), University Club of Orlando (Vice-President), Valencia Community College Foundation (Treasurer), Junior Achievement of Orange County (Chairman), and the Orlando Museum of Art (Treasurer). He was also a past board member for Spray Tech, Inc., Valencia Community College, Economic Development Council of Central Florida, National Council of Christians and Jews, Orange County Committee of 100, Parent Resource Center, Roy E. Crummer Graduate School of Business, and Salvation Army. Whether guiding young minds or shaping community initiatives, Ed’s influence resonated far and wide.
At the heart of Ed’s life was his family. His pride for his daughters was boundless, and his steadfast love and support has guided them throughout their lives. He was a faithful and devoted husband to Jerry until her death in 2000. Ed was blessed with a second chance at love and in 2008 married Kitty Wren who sadly passed away after a short illness in 2011. Ed was thrice blessed as he found profound companionship with Joan Ruffier, his loving partner who brought warmth and care to their shared journey. Together they embraced their life together with grace and gratitude for each other.
Edward was a beacon of wisdom, kindness and dedication. He leaves behind a legacy of love, integrity, and service that will forever inspire those fortunate enough to have known him. His family, friends and community mourn his loss profoundly and honor the incredible life he led.
