A 13-year-old girl was killed on Sunday afternoon after an ATV she was riding with three other teens overturned in Volusia County.
The fatal crash occurred at around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 15, near the intersection of Rasley Road and Brasher Road in New Smyrna Beach, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.
The four teens were traveling westbound in a “two-seater side by side” ATV when the rider lost control of the vehicle on Rasley Road, west of the Brasher Road intersection.
FHP stated the ATV veered off the roadway and overturned, ejecting all four teens from the vehicle.
One of the ATV’s passengers, a 13-year-old girl from Edgewater, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The remaining occupants of the ATV – a 13-year-old New Smyrna Beach girl (rider), 13-year-old Edgewater girl (passenger), and 14-year-old New Smyrna Beach girl (passenger) – avoided serious injuries and were not transported to the hospital.
A trooper mentioned in the report that the four teens were not wearing helmets at the time of the accident.
According to FHP, the crash remains under investigation.
