Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) State Trooper Car

An elderly driver was killed on Wednesday night after running a red light and crashing into an SUV near an exit ramp from State Road 417 in Seminole County.

The fatal collision occurred on Red Bug Lake Road, near the intersection of SR 417, at around 9:20 p.m. on Wednesday, January 22, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

FHP stated that a 74-year-old Winter Springs man was traveling westbound on Red Bug Lake Road in a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox when he approached the intersection of SR 417.

At the same time, a 2015 Acura MDX was heading southbound on the SR 417 exit ramp to Red Bug Lake Road.

A trooper noted in the report that as the Acura began turning left onto Red Bug Lake Road, the elderly driver of the Chevrolet “ran the red light” at the intersection. As a result, the front of the Chevrolet struck the left side of the Acura.

The elderly driver was transported to Oviedo Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased.

The driver and sole occupant of the Acura, a 19-year-old Oviedo woman, was taken to the same medical facility for treatment of minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation, according to FHP.
