Elsie Leona (Sudlow) Carter, born December 7, 1926 went peacefully to her home in heaven Sunday, May 21, 2023 surrounded by her children at home.
Elsie had four children, Jimmy Carter (deceased),Patsy Gilbert (Dave), Libby Thompson (Don), John Carter (Micheline), and three grandchildren; Devon (Michaela), Dylan and Dallas Gilbert.
She was raised by her much loved grandmother Sarah Robertson in Columbia, Missouri where she later graduated from Mizzou with a Bachelor of Education; then taught high school Home Economics in St. Louis before starting her family. She earned a Master’s Degree in Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice from Webster College while working as a Deputy Juvenile Officer at the St. Louis County Court. During her 24 years at the court, she received awards for implementing a volunteer program to assist with caseloads and for developing a DUI program. Her favorite things to do in St. Louis were volunteering at the USO, going to the Muny Opera in Forest Park, and eating at Rigazzi’s on “The Hill”.
She moved to Florida in 1991 to be near her children and grandchildren and continued to serve the USO and Meals on Wheels. She loved the beach, playing Skip Bo, and attending the Festival of Trees each Christmas. Elsie would often quote her grandmother Sarah, “This Life and Then the Next.” See ya on the other side, mom.
A memorial honoring Elsie will be held at Metro Life Church, 910 S. Winter Park Dr., Casselberry, FL. at 1 PM on Tuesday, May 30, 2023.
