A 911 call about an overdose at an apartment complex turned into a standoff with Apopka police on Friday after a man pulled out a handgun.
At around 4 p.m. on Friday, June 21, Apopka Police Department officers responded to the Oasis at Wekiva apartment complex located at 518 Lake Bridge Lane in reference to a woman who had overdosed inside one of the units, according to APD.
When officers arrived on scene, they began providing medical aid to the woman until Apopka Fire Department personnel arrived on scene. The woman was then transported to AdventHealth Apopka, where her condition stabilized.
While at the apartment, officers began interviewing a man who resided there. According to Apopka police, the man “produced a handgun,” and the officers immediately exited the apartment.
The Central Florida Metro SWAT team soon arrived at the apartment complex. This team consists of police officers from Apopka, Maitland, Ocoee, Winter Garden, and Winter Park.
During the standoff, officers heard a single gunshot. When the SWAT team entered the apartment, they discovered that the man was deceased from “an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.”
The Apopka Police Department stated in a media release that this incident is “isolated,” and there is no danger to the public.
No further details were released by Apopka police.
