Bicyclist dies after being struck by semi on Orange Avenue

A bicyclist from Orlando was killed on Thursday morning after he was struck by a semi-truck while attempting to cross Orange Avenue.

The fatal accident happened shortly after 6 a.m. on Thursday, September 5, near the intersection or Orange Avenue and Prince Street in Orlando, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

FHP stated that a semi-truck was traveling northbound on Orange Avenue in the outside lane. As the semi-truck was approaching the intersection of Prince Street, a 58-year-old Orlando man attempted to cross the roadway on a bicycle.

The bicyclist was not in a marked crosswalk when he pedaled into the direct path of the semi-truck. As a result, the front of the semi-truck collided with the bicycle, and the bike’s rider was pronounced deceased at the scene, according to the report.

The two occupants of the semi-truck – a 52-year-old man and 60-year-old woman, both from Tarpon Springs – were not injured.

The northbound lanes of Orange Avenue, near the site of the crash, were temporarily blocked on Thursday morning. At 11:25 a.m., FHP provided an update and stated that the roadblock in the area has been cleared.

The names of the individuals involved in the accident were not released by FHP.

The crash remains under investigation, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
