A 13-year-old girl was killed on Thursday afternoon after an SUV struck her bicycle near an intersection in Brevard County.

The accident occurred at around 4:20 p.m. on Thursday, October 10, near the intersection of Aurora Road and Cecilia Street in Melbourne, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

FHP stated that four individuals – a 32-year-old woman (driver), 22-year-old man, two-year-old boy, and three-month-old girl, all from Groveland – were approaching the intersection of Cecilia Street while traveling westbound on Aurora Road.

At the same time, the 13-year-old bicyclist was heading southbound, near the same intersection, when she attempted to cross Aurora Street. A trooper noted in the report that the teen was not in a marked crosswalk when her bicycle entered the direct path of the SUV.

As a result, the front of the SUV struck the bicycle. The teen rider was transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, where she was pronounced deceased. She was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, according to the report.

The SUV’s occupants were not injured.

In the report, the trooper stated that the crash remains under investigation.
